WORLD OCEAN HEADQUARTERS The Building

.

.

The World Ocean Headquarters will be located in a landmark building, The Big Blue, designed by leading Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh.  The design of The Big Blue takes the form of a lighthouse that can help us navigate the rough waters we are in and serve as a reminder of the ocean’s invaluable significance for life on earth.

The building of Headquarters will strive to advance the leading edge of sustainability both in terms of construction and energy conservation. The aim is for The Big Blue to be the most sustainable building in the world in its category. The construction of buildings is a significant contributor to our carbon footprint, with 40 percent of emissions stemming directly from the construction and maintenance of the built environment.

The goal is for The Big Blue to generate at least as much energy as it uses and to obtain a BREEAM “outstanding” rating. BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) by BRE (Building Research Establishment) is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for buildings. It evaluates energy and water use, health and wellbeing, pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.
