Laboratories

The REV Ocean laboratories will allow for the preservation, processing, analyses and storage of specimens while at sea. They will be well equipped with state-of-the art microscopes, fume cupboards, centrifuges, autoclave, pH meters, high-pressure gasses, fridges, freezers and ovens.

Educational Lab

This lab is used for teaching, use of high capacity microscopes, and preparation of materials for use in other labs.

Wet Lab Geology

This lab provides the necessary space for the processing of sediment samples collected with the coring systems.

Wet Fish Lab

This lab includes equipment for the analyses of pelagic trawl samples, oceanographic research, and benthic samples. The lab has a species sorting system, scales, walk-in freezer, 4 workstations and high-speed data link to the rest of the vessel.

Wet Lab Common

This laboratory can be used to process wet samples as they are brought on board by the ROV or submesrsible.

Equipment includes:

  • Double utility sink
  • Safety eye wash station
  • Fume hood
  • Chemical storage
  • Seawater analysis
  • mTSG flow through system
  • Freezers

Microbiology Lab

This lab is used for processing and analysing microbiological samples. The lab can be used also to study the effects of toxic chemicals on biological organisms, at the population, community and ecosystem levels.

The lab has all the necessary equipment for wet chemical extraction and preparation of molecular samples, including an automated solvent extraction system.

Seawater Sampling

The physico-chemical, biological and environmental analysis lab allows us to offer the best solution for monitoring marine water from the moment of sample to the final analysis report.

2 x Dry Labs

These labs are used for the processing and analyses of clean, dry samples.

The labs will be equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including gas chromatography/mass spectrometers (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometer (LC/MS) for molecular quantification and identification.

One of the dry labs will also have a pair of stable isotope ratio mass spectrometers with GC and elemental analyzer inlet devices. This system provides the capability to analyze C, H, O, N, and S in bulk and molecular organic samples.
