Equipment and Facilities

Equipment and on board Facilities

This equipment ranges from state of the art sonars and echo-sounders, manned and autonomous vehicles, a highly innovative pelagic trawl, sediment coring systems, 8 fully-equipped laboratories, a 35 seat auditorium and multi-media editing rooms.

As new equipment is acquired, it will be added to this page.

Underwater vehicles

REV Ocean’s 2300 m manned and 6000 m unmanned vehicles are ideal for expanding knowledge of the deep ocean, placing 98% of the underwater world within range of researchers on board.

Pelagic trawl

REV Ocean has a pelagic trawl system for trawling down to approximately 2000 m depth. The system includes Simrad PX FX sonars, Scantrol selection and vacuum system for on board live sampling of specimens up to 15 cm diameter.

The specimens will be transported to the vessel via a vacuum system, greatly increasing the morphological integrity of each individual. This is a novel eco-harvesting system for live catch and release of pelagic fish.

Airbus ACH145 helicopter

Helicopter

Airbus ACH145 helicopter: this helicopter was launched in 2018. It has a five-blade rotor and increased maximum take-off weight. The helicopter, which can operate from either of two helidecks on the vessel, plays a key role in REV Ocean’s primary science missions, particularly in polar regions, as well as for re-supply and passenger transport.

Accoustic sensors

REV Ocean is equipped with a full suite of Kongsberg sensors for mapping the seafloor and biological communities in the water column, as well as current profilers and state-of-the-art processing software.

Seabird CTD

SBE9 CTD with DO sensor, fluorometer and altimeter rated to 6000 m.

The system includes a 24 bottle rosette, with 12 L bottles for sampling the water column.

Coring systems

REV Ocean is in the process of acquiring 3 different coring systems that will allow us to investigate benthic biodiversity and ecosystem function of soft sediment systems down to abyssal depths, to address provide sediment samples to answer questions related to climate change and plastic pollution.

Diving facilities

REV Ocean will have a compressor for SCUBA diving and there is a range of tenders suitable for supporting diving in a wide variety of locations.

A containerised Decompression Chamber can be supplied if required.

Scientific diving will be carried out under Norwegian Diving Legislation.

Tenders and workboats

REV Ocean will have a variety of tenders to support different activities, from diving and coastal sampling to passenger transportation and expedition activities.

Laboratories

We have a suite of 8 well-equipped wet and dry laboratories and freezers for storing and processing specimens and samples.

Communications and multi-media

The vessel will have state of the art communication capabilities to support the production of scientific and documentary photo, video, audio, and graphic design needs.
