REV Ocean will work in the Pacific to combat climate change and stop the flow of plastic into the ocean.

Fornebu, Norway  November 25th, 2020  –  REV Ocean and the Secretariat for the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) have concluded a Memorandum of Understanding. Since it was not possible to meet in person to finalise this agreement, both parties recorded video messages to mark the occasion.

Speaking from the Kon-Tiki museum in Oslo, REV Ocean CEO Nina Jensen welcomed the agreement as an exciting opportunity work together to combat climate change by restoring mangroves and seagrasses, stop the flow of plastic into the Pacific Ocean, and support the global ocean observing system.

Kosi Latu, Director General of SPREP also welcomed this long-term partnership. In a video from Samoa, Kosi highlighted the potential for REV Ocean to contribute towards the ongoing efforts to address ocean acidification and to work with Pacific Rim countries to identify areas of high plastic densities and to solve this problem.

REV Ocean would like to thank the Kon-tiki museum for allowing Nina to record the message from same raft that Thor Heyerdahl sailed on during his voyage in the Pacific. We look forward to continuing in these footsteps as we work with SPREP to find solutions to the unique challenges faced by the Pacific Ocean.

Dive into the depths of the Arctic Ocean near Svalbard with REV Ocean’s new Triton submarine

You can be one of the very first to have a truly unique underwater ocean experience with REV Ocean. In collaboration with TV-Aksjonen’s 2020 Campaign “ET HAV AV MULIGHETER” (an ocean of possibilities) REV Ocean has donated a dive in the 7500/3 Triton submarine up for auction. The money raised from the auction will support the fight against plastic pollution in the ocean.

“We are thrilled Project Rev Ocean chose to add a Triton 7500/3 submersible to the vast arsenal of subsea tools and equipment on their entirely unique and groundbreaking vessel. The capacity to visit such extreme depths and see things not possible any other way will dramatically enhance the experience of being aboard and create more ocean advocates. Project Rev Ocean is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are honored to be a part of their their vision,” said Triton President Patrick Lahey.

The Triton 7500/3 will be the deepest diving acrylic pressure hull equipped submersible ever conceived and is capable of diving to 7,500 feet or 2,286 meters with three people aboard. The revolutionary Triton 7500/3 features a transparent acrylic sphere as the pressure hull, which provides occupants with an immersive and completely unobstructed view of their surroundings while keeping them safe and comfortable at one atmosphere regardless of the diving depth. The Triton 7500/3 acrylic sphere is made using proprietary technology pioneered by Triton’s exclusive acrylic manufacturing partners, which results in a finished material that is stronger, clearer and superior to anything previously made.

I have dived with Triton subs on numerous expeditions and they provide unique platforms for visiting the ocean and viewing seascapes in a way that is not possible with other deep diving equipment. The new Triton 7500/3 will enable REV Ocean scientists to visit vulnerable marine ecosystems as well as reach the most productive zones of seamounts and other features such as deep-sea canyons and hydrothermal vents.” REV Ocean Science Director Alex Rogers.

REV Ocean will offer the winner the opportunity to join the Triton submarine and dive into the underwater world in Svalbard (in a fjord near Longyearbyen, maximum depth 100 meters). Together with a REV Ocean researcher, you will be able to observe some of the unique life in the Arctic, and at the same time try to identify areas where there may be plastic or other pollution, so that it can later be retrieved and disposed of correctly. The trip will be completed when the submarine is completed, which is in 2022. The exact time for completion is agreed between the contact person in REV Ocean and the bid winner. REV Ocean pays for flights from the nearest airport and one night at a hotel in Longyearbyen.

The auction is open until October 18th, 2020 at 22:11.

The Plastic REVolution Foundation summarizes learnings in comprehensive End-of-Phase report

This summer, the Plastic REVolution Foundation finalized a summary report of the work that had been undertaken during its first year of existence.

When the world shut down due to the corona virus, the Foundation had just finished its second pilot study in Accra . This represented a convenient moment to review and compile data collected, and draw a number of conclusions and learnings to be shared with the outside world.

We hope that by doing this, we can foster further understanding for how a project like this may be achieved, as well as for some of the main obstacles faced. Among others, the report describes the Ghanaian context, the key components of establishing economic viability of a pyrolysis plant, and a comprehensive overview of the work that the Foundation has done – including two pilot studies.

Since the report was finished, we have continued – and will continue – to work on the issues identified and described in the report. More important than anything is to demonstrate the economic viability of this project in order to ensure scalability and replicability.

Microsoft and Norwegian ocean technology partner are joining forces to help save the ocean

(Oslo 22.9.2020)

The Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Ocean (C4IR Ocean) is working to promote a sustainable ocean and is partnering with Microsoft to develop technology-based solutions to improve ocean health.

Aker and the World Economic Forum are behind C4IR Ocean, which is part of a global network of 10 Centers for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR). The network works to develop projects to enable technology and digitalization solve important societal tasks.

– We want to step up the use of technology to ensure future value creation. Whoever manages to exploit the potential that lies in new technology is tomorrow’s winner, this also applies to countries. We are pleased that Microsoft wants to join forces with us in this first thematic center in the C4IR network. We have no time to lose in the fight for a healthier ocean, says CEO of the World Economic Forum, Børge Brende, board member of C4IR Ocean.

– The ambition with the C4IR Ocean center is to establish a results-oriented collaboration arena for private and public players with the capacity and competency to make a difference in the work towards ensuring that resources in the oceans are managed responsibly and sustainably. Together we must act quickly. We are pleased to have Microsoft on the team as one of the world’s leading technology experts with a global reach. The fact that Microsoft is stepping in as a co-founding partner of C4IR Ocean in Norway gives the center resources and adds weight and impact in its work for a healthy and productive ocean, – says CEO of Aker, Øyvind Eriksen.

Microsoft takes responsibility for its water footprint

Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined why the global technology company is partnering with C4IR Ocean to protect the world’s oceans.

Microsoft Chief Environmental Officer Lucas Joppa said, “We are only as healthy as our ocean. It is critical to ensuring the planet doesn’t warm more than 1.5 degrees and ensuring economic security around the world. But climate change, pollution, and over exploitation of marine systems are putting our ocean in jeopardy. Microsoft and C4IR Ocean share a vision for ocean health and how to best use data and technology to achieve it. We’re proud to be the first corporate partner, outside the Aker group, of this important initiative and look forward to working together to ensure our ocean is healthy.”

Largest and most inclusive hub

C4IR Ocean’s flagship project is the construction of an ocean data platform that will be launched at the World Economic Forum’s summit on sustainable development on 23 September. The ocean data platform frees ocean data and makes them more accessible to researchers, decision-makers and developers, who are thus given access to a wide range of data sources on a large scale.

In the last six months, data from 220,000 research cruises since 1890 have been uploaded. The ocean data platform is built on Cognite Data Fusion technology and enables the time it takes to obtain this data to be reduced from days and hours to seconds. CEO of C4IR Ocean, Bjørn Tore Markussen, says:

 – We want to be the largest, most inviting hub for computer-driven solutions for the ocean and contribute to reduced emissions, plastic waste and overfishing. To do this, we need the biggest players on the team early on. We are already working with several committed partners in industry, science, conservation and government. I am impressed with the work Microsoft is doing on sustainability, and it is motivating to team up with the best to ensure a healthy and productive ocean. We have found the right partner in Microsoft to realize the power of sharing data through cloud technology, data analysis and machine learning to build smart solutions for the ocean.

Through close and good contact with the Norwegian government, C4IR Ocean supports the work of Erna Solberg’s Ocean panel.

 – It is inspiring to see that C4IR Ocean uses the large knowledge base we in the panel have presented. We look forward to collaborating on the role of new technologies in finding sustainable solutions for the Ocean after the Heads of State and Government present their recommendations on 3 December, says Vidar Helgesen, who leads the Ocean Panel’s work for the Prime Minister.

Important for Norway

The partnership between C4IR Ocean and Microsoft was announced during the launch of Microsoft’s water sustainability strategy. The company has set itself the goal of becoming carbon negative and zero waste by 2030 and they want to take responsibility for their water footprint while helping others to do the same.

–  We are proud to be one of the organizations working with C4IR Ocean on their open ocean data platform. This global, open-source platform gives researchers, app developers and marine planners access to both historical and real-time data so they can develop solutions to improve ocean health. It is clear that this is important for a shipping nation like Norway and we in Microsoft Norway are proud to be part of this important journey, says Kimberly Lein-Mathisen, CEO of Microsoft Norway.

REV Ocean has ambitious ocean mapping plans with the Seabed 2030 Project

Oslo, 9 September 2020 – Today REV Ocean signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, to work together to advance understanding of the ocean floor and support the United Nation’s Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between The Nippon Foundation and GEBCO to inspire the complete mapping of the world’s ocean by 2030, and to compile all bathymetric data into the freely available GEBCO Ocean Map. GEBCO is a joint project of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and is the only organisation with a mandate to map the entire ocean floor.

REV Ocean is a not-for-profit company created with one overarching purpose and ambition – to make our oceans healthy again. Established in Norway in 2017, REV Ocean’s mission is committed to recovering the negative pressures currently affecting the oceans with a particular focus on dealing with the issues of plastic pollution, climate change, and the environmental impacts of fishing and overfishing.

The MOU will see REV Ocean contribute bathymetric data to Seabed 2030, as well as promote practices in technological innovation, infrastructure and solutions of ocean mapping and bathymetric data management challenges.

“Collaborative working, on an international scale, is vital to achieving our goal of mapping the ocean floor by 2030,” said Jamie McMichael-Phillips, Director of Seabed 2030. “This new partnership is a testimony to that – and we look forward to working together with REV Ocean to identify ways to increase ocean mapping activity that in turn supports wider efforts that promote the ocean’s health.”

Speaking at the virtual signing event, CEO of REV Ocean Nina Jensen said: “A complete map of the seabed will play a significant part in helping restore the health of the ocean, and in reducing the negative pressures it faces, including those posed by climate change. REV Ocean is therefore proud to partner with Seabed 2030, and to play a part in the monumental challenge of creating the first ever definitive map of the world ocean floor.”

All data collected and shared with the Seabed 2030 Project will be included in the GEBCO global grid – the most complete bathymetric dataset of the world’s ocean floor. By 2030, the grid will represent a complete map to coincide with the conclusion of the UN Decade of Ocean Science.

REV Ocean partners with the World Maritime University to promote ocean education

Oslo, 8 September 2020 – In a virtual signing ceremony, REV Ocean and the World Maritime University (WMU) signed a new partnership agreement. The agreement will focus on tackling marine debris, IUU fishing, and climate change through various education initiatives, but may also address the other priority areas of REV Ocean.

Specifically, REV Ocean and WMU will develop the concept of a ‘floating university’ to provide new ocean science learning opportunities in developing coastal and small island States globally. The collaboration will enable young and unestablished scientists from all over the world to become stewards of our ocean and undertake important science in areas such as marine debris, IUU fishing and climate change.

Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, welcomed the agreement saying, “WMU is pleased to enter into this important agreement with REV Ocean that promotes ocean literacy and education. The ocean is the lifeblood of humanity and through key partnerships such as this, we are working to protect it and support the achievement of UN SDG 14.”

Nina Jensen, CEO of REV Ocean said that: this partnership agreement is the start of a long-term commitment of REV Ocean to education. We are looking forward to working with WMU over the coming years to enable students from all over the world to learn on board the REV Ocean vessel.

About WMU

The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity building. The University offers unique postgraduate educational programmes, undertakes wide-ranging research in maritime and ocean-related studies, and continues maritime capacity building in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

About REV Ocean

REV Ocean is a not-for-profit company founded in June 2017 by Norwegian businessman Kjell Inge Rokke with one overarching purpose, creating solutions for a healthier ocean. Established in Fornebu, Norway, REV Ocean works to improve our knowledge of the ocean, make that knowledge more available and turn the knowledge into a new generation of ocean solutions and raise awareness of global impacts on the marine environment.

On the Move!

Brattvag, 24 August 2020 – This week REV Ocean is making its first self-propelled journey at sea. Over a two-day period, the vessel will operate on its own power for the first time and without the assistance of tug boats.

A VARD crew will take REV Ocean on the short journey from the Vard Brattvag shipyard to the Vard Langsten yard in a neighbouring fjord. The next phase of the build will take place in Langsten as the Braatvag yard has another build project arriving and needs the dock space where REV Ocean currently lies.

During the journey, VARD will conduct initial sea trials to test the vessels capabilities, equipment, and safety features. The crew will get the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the state of the art bridge, on-board logistics and the ship’s performance at sea.

While Covid-19 has resulted in a slowdown in the build, work nevertheless continues and the next phase of construction in Langsten will be another milestone in the development of the worlds most advanced research and expedition vessel.
